In a report from Gulf Times, Qatar has been lauded as one of the best when it comes to offering legal support for migrant workers in the region. This comes in a recent conference in honour of the International Domestic Workers Day as held by the National Human Rights Committee.
According to migration management officer Roula Hamati (International Organisation for Migration, Qatar Mission), Qatar may be at the forefront of improvements and changing the status quo for the better. “We are very happy about the reforms undertaken in Qatar to protect the rights of the migrant workers. Qatar is a special case in the region. If there is anywhere in the region where there is a lot of momentum for change, for positive improvements, for a lot of things to happen, it is actually in Qatar.”
This includes Qatar spearheading the rights of migrant workers as well, which is especially significant given the IOM’s recent initiative to enhance its domestic work portfolio.
In line with this, the IOM has launched a programme that aims to shift how society as a whole views domestic work. This also involves raising awareness on the issues of domestic workers, as well as improving their capacities in various aspects. This should provide them with enough agency in such a way that they can be involved in the decision-making process as well, given that the decisions involve them at the core.
More importantly, the programme aims to boost domestic workers’ access to justice and offer them support. “There has been a lot of measures in Qatar in terms of the promotion of rights of migrant workers and domestic workers but I think the last barrier is the issue of access to justice because there are always challenges when it comes to access especially when we talk about domestic work, because of the nature of this work that happens behind closed doors inside people’s homes,” says Hamati.
