Qatar reinforces commitments to labour reforms

On the topic of labour reforms in the State, HE the Minister of Labour Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri was able to discuss various topics through meetings with relevant representatives. These officials are from the International Labour Organisation, the International Organisation for Migration, and more. This was done during the meeting of the Council of the International Organization for Migration in the Swiss capital.

The further cooperation between the ILO and Qatar was also discussed by HE the Minister of Labour and the Director-General of the International Labour Organisation Guy Ryder. This is in line with the existing commitment of Qatar to keep its labour reforms. Qatar will continue to develop rules and regulations and create laws to bolster the legislative system when it comes to the protection of the rights of workers. The labour law’s reforms for worker safety are also in sync with the Qatar National Vision 2030.

According to the National Vision, the State should have sustainable development as well as a high standard of living for citizens by 2030. Long-term goals are clearly laid out, as well as the different pillars that make up the advanced society that Qatar aims to be. The challenges include the following:

“Modernisation and preservation of traditions
The needs of the current generation and of future generations
Managed growth and uncontrolled expansion
The size and quality of the expatriate labour force and the selected path of development
Economic growth, social development, and environmental management”

Meetings with other officials were also held, which included the Director of the International Labour Standards Department at International Labour Organisation Corinne Vargas, the Director-General of the International Organisation for Migration Antonio Vitorino, the Deputy Director-General for Field Operations and Partnerships at the International Labour Organisation Mussa Omaro, and the Secretary-General of the International Organisation of Employers (IOE) Roberto Suarez Santos.
