Qatar provides labour inspection training, warns against heat illness

Qatar has organised proper labour training for inspectors via the University of Doha for Science and Technology (UDST). This is to make sure that labour inspectors are updated with international standards and certifications.

In particular, the Continuing and Professional Education Directorate (CPED) of UDST conducted a training session on Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) for the Ministry of Labour (MoL). For three weeks, 18 inspectors were given proper training based on the standards of Nebosh International General Certificate IG1 & IG2 on OSH.

To ensure that they are qualified after the training, they had to complete a six-hour test. Those who passed were rewarded with an international certification as awarded by director of the Continuing and Professional Education Directorate Dr Saheim Khalaf al-Temimi.

Meanwhile, Hussain Ali al-Hababi, head of the Inspection Department at the Ministry of Labour, also expects to conduct more collaborations with UDST in the future.

In other news, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) continues to keep labourers in different sectors safe from the harsh environment during this season with important guidelines on heat illness and how to avoid it. The MoPH issues these preventative measures to spread awareness of the dangers that labourers can encounter when it comes to outdoor and indoor heat.

There are also first aid measures to be aware of. Telltale signs of a medical emergency include slurred speech, abnormal behaviour, abnormal thinking, seizures and even loss of consciousness. Everyone must be vigilant and must call 999 for emergencies.

Measures that workers can take in case their colleague experiences heat illness include cooling the worker with ice or water. Give the colleague some water if he or she experiences nausea or headaches. They must also remove unnecessary clothing in case of dizziness or weakness. It’s important to move to a much cooler area if possible.
