To ensure that consumers are always protected when it comes to retail, the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MoCI) has recently conducted a joint inspection campaign with the Ministry of Interior (MoI) on an outlet in Msheireb. Upon discovering that the retail outlet has been operating without a commercial license, the ministry took action and issued a violation against it.
According to Article No 6 of Law No 8 of 2008 on Consumer Protection, outlets with no commercial license will be in violation of the law, along with displaying and selling counterfeit items. This includes items with international marks on social media platforms, which will necessitate due legal measures.
These campaigns aim to keep markets and commercial activities under strict monitoring in order to avoid any abuses as well as to control prices. These measures are also in place in order to ensure that falsified or counterfeit items are discovered and that standard specifications are conformed to.
Penalties for violating the law include administrative closure as well as fines. These can be anywhere from QR3,000 to QR1min.
