Qatar prioritises workers’ rights via Ministry of Labour’s initiatives

To make sure that workers’ safety and security are a top priority, the Ministry of Labour is renewing its commitment to apply best practices under international standards to further promote the protection of expatriate workers. Legislative updates will continue to be implemented on a sustainable basis, especially after the FIFA Qatar 2022 Championship.

Qatar has been steadily developing strategies to improve and maintain the security and safety of workers for both the short term and the long term. This May 1st during International Workers’ Day, the Ministry has renewed its efforts to implement precautionary measures to keep workers healthy.

This includes occupational safety in the work environment as well as the ministry’s partnership with the International Labour Organisation (ILO). The Ministry has also abolished the exit permit as well as the No Objection Certificate from the previous employer. There have also been rules in place to ensure that workers are protected from heat stress, as well as the wage protection system and housing safety. Workers are also protected in terms of health insurance – plus, there are various labour complaint mechanisms in place as well as a hotline that can easily be accessed when needed.

The Ministry of Labour has also modernised the work environment of Qatar as a whole, and it is continuously coordinating with various institutions and businesses to ensure that companies and employers are in keeping with these labour initiatives. The Workers’ Support Fund is also very much in place.

In the same vein, the Director of Labour Relations Department at the Ministry of Labour Abdullah al-Dosari gave credit to the role of expatriate workers in boosting the sustainable development of the country. Qatari citizens in the private sector are also working hand-in-hand with the government to make sure the country’s work environments remain attractive.
