Qatar continues to contribute to the achievement of sustainable food systems as stated by HE Minister of Municipality Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie. At the United Nations Food Systems Summit in Rome, Italy, Qatar has been highlighted to offer support for less-developed nations. According to HE Minister of Municipality Dr Al Subaie, Qatar is actively participating in boosting these developing nations’ food security in order to offer proper assistance via a strategic partnership with the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
Currently, Qatar has extended its aid to vulnerable rural communities in Somalia. In order to combat the adverse effects of climate change, the nation has helped improve water access as well as offered invaluable wisdom in the form of proper training for small-scale farmers and herders. More importantly, this also includes marginalized groups such as the youth and women.
Meanwhile, the Nanmo project between the Qatar Fund for Development and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation continues to contribute to sustainable development goals by emphasising cross-border food security. This is done via agricultural technologies that are well adapted to climate change, as well as via the proper empowerment of small-scale producers. An investment of $200 million will pave the way for developing resilient food systems and markets in these areas.
Further down the road, the United Nations Summit on Sustainable Development will be held in September next year, and Qatar is actively contributing to the ongoing negotiations regarding the declaration as a comprehensive guiding roadmap.
