Qatar holds workshop on cybercrimes; shares insights on Covid-19 pandemic

In order to raise awareness of online crimes, the Legal and Judicial Studies Centre at the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) held a workshop on cybercrime. This was directed towards members of the Doha Youth Center, and discussed the nature and risks of cybercrime as well as what to do in case anyone falls victim to it.

The educational workshop was held as part of the summer activities from the Doha Youth Center as led by the head of the legal awareness department at the Center of Legal and Judicial Studies (CLJS). According to Zainab Al Yafei, the penalty for slander is “a sentence of not more than three years imprisonment and a fine of not more than QR 100,000 or either of these penalties”.

The workshop also shed light on the negative effects of rapid technological development. The abuse of the internet and negative behavioural patterns across social media channels affect new kinds of cybercrime, which include defamation and slander.

Should anyone fall victim to any kind of cybercrime, this must be proven with evidence such as a witness or a photo. Part of the procedures include resorting to a family member and alerting the authorities at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ministry of Interior.

In other news, HE Minister of Public Health Dr. Hanan Mohammed Al Kuwari shared insights on the impact of Covid-19 on the country.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has been a national challenge, and at the same time an opportunity to test our plans, the resilience of our systems and our preparedness to be better positioned for any future public health emergency. Our country continued to progress towards achieving its National Vision 2030 and, during the pandemic, successfully hosted many global events including the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 .
