The Ministry of Labour in Qatar has teamed up with the Ministry of Transport in organising a seminar on raising awareness about the Maritime Labour Convention. The training seminar was held in cooperation with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) and International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) as well.
According to Gulf Times, HE MoL’s Assistant Undersecretary for Labour Affairs Mohamed Hassan al-Obaidly was in attendance, along with Ministry of Transport’s Assistant Undersecretary of Maritime Transport Affairs Dr Saleh bin Fetais al-Marri. Director of the International Labour Standards Department of the ILO Corinne Varga was also in attendance, with Head of the ILO Office in Doha Max Tunon, Regional Secretary of the International Transport Workers’ Federation Bilal Malkawi and Legal Director at the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) Ruwan Subasinghe joining as well.
The awareness session is meant to highlight the importance of maritime transport. It also aims to cater to the concerns of both employers and employees when it comes to transport stability. It addressed various issues in the maritime transport industry for labour, as well as the challenges that were brought forth by the Covid-19 pandemic. This includes issues on the living conditions of seafarers as well.
In other news, the labour industry also highlights the advancement of women along with human rights and equal participation in accordance with the Qatar National Vision 2030. Equal opportunities include those within education and employment as well. Third Secretary of Qatar’s Permanent Mission to the UN Sheikha Al Maha bint Mubarak al-Thani delivered a statement at the General Debate of the Third Committee of the 77th Session of the General Assembly on the item Advancement of Women.
