Qatar continues to protect consumers by limiting price increases

According to Qatar News Agency (QNA), the Cabinet has given its approval to implement rules on increasing the price point of goods and services as stated by a draft decision of HE the Minister of Commerce and Industry.

HE the Prime Minister and Minister of Interior Sheikh Khalid bin Khalifa bin Abdulaziz al-Thani chaired a meeting at the Amiri Diwan, where HE the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs Mohamed bin Abdullah al-Sulaiti provided the proceedings’ details.

Topics discussed included HE the Minister of Public Health Dr Hanan Mohamed al-Kuwari providing a clear report on managing the spread of the coronavirus. A draft decision of HE the Minister of Interior was also approved when it comes to applications for ordinary passports, as well as the renewal and amendment of these passports. A draft decision of HE the Minister of Interior was also approved in terms of issuing Qatari travel documents.

Additionally, a draft decision of HE the Minister of Commerce and Industry was approved regarding price increases, in accordance with Article 10 of Law No 8 of 2008. According to QNA, this “prohibits the supplier from increasing the prices of goods and services, without complying with the basis and rules issued by the decision of HE the Minister, and within the framework of keeping pace with economic and commercial developments and changes, and ensuring the effectiveness and balance of markets in a manner that allows suitable prices for all parties, whether producers, suppliers or consumers.”

This will help to protect the purchasing power of many individuals, as well as decrease the burden of prices on consumers. This puts a healthy limit on price increases as well as justifies them for basic goods.

Other approvals included agreements on the mutual exemption from entry visa requirements, non-disclosure agreements between Portugal and the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority, and many more.
