The tenth plenary session of the International Labour Conference (ILC) is currently in session until June 16th, and HE the Minister of Labour Dr Ali bin Smaikh al-Marri is the chair for its 111th session. Held in Geneva, Switzerland, the session reviewed reports and various discussions on shifts within the global labour market. Representatives from 187 member states of the International Labour Organisation were in attendance.
According to HE the Assistant Undersecretary at the Ministry of Labour Mohamed Hassan al-Obaidly, Qatar is currently hard at work to improve the capabilities of the country’s workforce, making sure that the national level is efficient and is in tune with the changes occurring in the global labour force. This is also in line with the goals of the Qatar National Vision 2030.
As such, the country is eager to build a more competitive economy especially when it comes to investments and entrepreneurship, and with the development of small and medium enterprises as well. This, in turn, should require skilled expatriate workers to boost productivity.
The International Parliament of Labour or the ILC aims to set policies for the International Labour Organisation. It’s set in Geneva every year, and includes both recommendations and agreements as well, as the highest decision-making authority in the ILO. With this, governments can discuss various labour issues and social concerns along with employers’ and workers’ organisations of member states.
