Qatar continues to enforce strict Wage Protection System
The timely payment of salaries for all kinds of workers is a strict and serious matter. Following the peaceful protest staged by employees last August 4 in the Sheehaniya area, the Government Communications Office (GCO) conducted a thorough investigation of the issue wherein the salaries of workers were said to have been withheld for three months covering May, June and July 2019. With the investigation of the authorities, the said employees were paid immediately in full within two days.
According to the GCO statement, “Workers also have the right to change their employer due to the violation of Qatar’s labour laws. The Ministry of Administrative Development, Labour and Social Affairs (ADLSA) is co-ordinating with all workers who choose to exercise this legal right. The Government of Qatar is committed to improving the Wage Protection System to ensure that workers’ wages are paid on time and that wage arrears are systematically settled.”
“By August 6, 2019, after consultation with all stakeholders, the outstanding salaries of all workers were paid in full through the Wage Protection System (WPS),” said the GCO. Following this swift action was the arrest of the authorised signatories of the two companies in question. Both companies were found to have delayed the release of the salaries due to the negative cash flow as a result of non-payments in their supply chain.
“If a worker identifies a workplace violation, they are encouraged to lodge a complaint at a Government Service Center or at one of Qatar’s complaint kiosks,” said the GCO. “The Government of Qatar places the utmost importance on strengthening the rights of its guest workers and ensuring that all companies respect these rights and adhere to Qatar’s labour laws.”
With this incident, the government advises employees to be vigilant about their rights and their due payments. All kinds of employees are valued highly, making the state one of the most lucrative places to expand one’s career. Employees may also take part in ADLSA’s initiatives as it conducts its programme of workshops. These serve to help raise awareness of how workers can raise their various complaints and issues to the necessary bodies of authority, as well as the options and avenues available for them.
