Important New Info on Work and Residence Permits

New measures on the work permits and residence permits have been announced by the Ministry of Interior (MoI) and the Ministry of Administrative Development, Labor and Social Affairs (MADLSA) for implementation at the soonest possible time. This includes allowing the sons of residents to be able to work in the private sector, no longer with the need to change sponsorships. New visas for temporary work will also be granted for certain professions, as well as reducing the appropriate fees down by 20% on the MoI’s electronic services.

The Director General of the Department of Passports Brigadier Mohammed Ahmed Al Ateeq, Assistant Undersecretary for Labor Affairs of the MADLSA Mohammed Hassan Al Obaidli, and Assistant Director of Legal Affairs at MoI Lt. Col. Ahmed Abdullah Al Harami attended a press conference where it was further explained how work visas will be issued by MoI upon the approval by the MADLSA. These can be carried out in the Qatar Visa Centres abroad for ultimate convenience.

Meanwhile, a legislative tool may soon be implemented via the amendment of the provision of Article No. 17 of Law No. 21 of 2015. This will soon allow all members of an expatriate family to be able to work with any private sector employer even without the need to transfer their residence, as opposed to the current system in place where only daughters are allowed to work without the need for changing sponsorships.

According to the Director General of the Department of Passports, fees for services rendered will also be reduced as part of the Ministry of Interior’s initiative to facilitate electronic procedures. All of these new procedures aim to improve the labour market in the country. These new developments will also be able to give it a welcome boost to further meet the development strategies and the nation vision of the country. This will also encourage a more attractive and suitable environment for more foreign investment.

Furthermore, advantages of the new proposals include reducing recruitment costs and housing expenses, as well as being able to maximize the potentials and competencies of more household members. This will be advantageous both for the employers and the employees, boosting diversification in the workplace even more.
