Global firms bid Kahramaa for photovoltaic technology power plant
The Qatar General Electricity and Water Corporation (Kahramaa) takes pride in its first solar power project in the country with five bids from international firms. The global developers bid for the project of using photovoltaic technology to produce energy. This public-private partnership lets Kahramaa evaluate technical and legal affairs, as well as review commercial offers and the like.
With a vast area of 10sq km and an impressive total capacity of an estimated minimum of 700 MW, the West Doha Solar Power Plant project near the Al Kharsa’a district is expected to start in the first quarter of 2022. By the first quarter of 2021, 350 MW will be connected to the grid.
There has been a nationwide movement to reduce dependence on fossil fuels in the past years, with the reduction of carbon emissions as one of the main priorities. By diversifying electricity sources and making production more efficient, energy can be used and produced more effectively. The appropriate proportions of renewable energy are then key to achieving economic diversification. All these and more are crucial when it comes to the Qatar National Vision 2030. Environmental development and economic enhancement go hand in hand to make this dream a reality.
As the sole operator and owner of electricity networks and water distribution, Kahramaa is tasked with providing energy to the nation as efficiently as possible. It is responsible for purchasing and distributing water and electricity as well as planning for the proper development of energy distribution networks. It provides regulations on governing electrical connections, water installations, consultations, and technical and institutional support for desalination plants and power generation.
So far, there are 16 qualified companies (including leading firms in the world) to develop solar power plants. Due to the attractiveness and the lucrative opportunities of the Qatari market, Kahramaa has received bids from alliances and firms from Japan, France, China, and South Korea, solidifying the strength and interest of international partnerships. This further demonstrates the continuing and ever increasing positive outlook for foreign investments and business opportunities in the country, today and in all the years to come.
