Ashghal sees increase in Qatari workers; Ministry of Labour shuts down offices in violation of labour laws

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has reported an increase in Qatari employees by 135% in four years. “There are currently 425 Qatari engineers in Ashghal who are employed with a scholarship or as a replacement/ Qatarisation plan in line with Qatar National Vision 2030. The Authority is making great efforts to increase the Qatarisation,” says its official statement.

Given that one of the goals of the Human Resources Department for Ashghal is to boost the number of qualified Qatari employees, it seems that the strategic mission of the authority is right on track. It is also part of the authority’s goals to develop Qatari employees’ capabilities and their various competencies via specialised training programs.

This goes hand-in-hand with the authority’s aim to transcend simple road construction and the development of bridges and drainage networks. It is also part of their mission to develop not just government establishments but also Qatari employees’ skills. This, in turn, will help employees operate specific assets and boost efficiency levels while working. This also helps with increasing the capabilities of local employees and reducing the reliance on foreign workers. Special programs include engineering, project management, administration, computer science and more.

In other news, the Ministry of Labour shut down 11 labour recruitment offices due to violations of labour provisions. One license was also revoked – this is part of the ministry’s continuing efforts to ensure that all labour offices are conducting affairs in accordance with the provisions of the law, whether foreign or local.

Closed offices are not allowed to recruit employees or conclude contacts. Some violations include the exploitation of workers, which is why it is always advised for those looking for work to ensure that all documents are officially processed by trusted liaisons to ensure all permits and apostilles are in order.

In case there are any complaints, individuals simply have to contact the Ministry of Labour at the 40288101 hotline or via infomol.gov.qa.
